When our first child was on the way, we did what many Malaysian and Singaporean Chinese parents do — we looked for a 师傅 to help with the name.

What we found online was harder than expected. Prices ranged from a few hundred to a few thousand ringgit, often with little explanation of the difference. Some profiles had no verifiable background. One "master" sent us a list of names that, when we checked the characters ourselves, did not appear to relate meaningfully to our baby's chart.

We paid anyway. Then we spent the next few months learning what we wished we had understood before paying.

师傅 was never a certificate. It was simply how people addressed someone who had done a craft long enough to be trusted with it — the old gentleman down the lane with the worn almanac and the reading glasses.

We're not that man. We're parents who built the thing we wished existed: a naming service that works from your baby's 八字 and 五行 balance, cross-referenced against a proper Chinese character dictionary — meaning, stroke count, tone, and how the name actually sounds in a Malaysian or Singaporean home.

We use the name 张师傅 because that is what this tradition feels like to us — familiar, practical and trusted. Not because we're pretending to be mystics.
